Prevention of diabetes can often be accomplished by managing a few critical factors. These factors include diet, weight control, stress and smoking.

Diabetes is a disease where the body is not able to metabolize the glucose in the blood. Type 1 diabetes is caused by the destruction of Beta islet cells in the pancreas which secretes insulin. People with Type 1 diabetes need to be on insulin for the rest of their lives.

Type 2 diabetes is cause by the destruction of insulin receptors on cell surfaces which causes the cells to be resistant to insulin. Type 2 diabetes can often be managed or prevented with lifestyle changes and medication and in some cases, lifestyle changes alone. The onset of Type 2 diabetes can be prevented by changes in living conditions or lifestyle changes that keep blood sugar at a healthy level. This can be accomplished by managing a few critical factors.

The first factor is diet and managing your diet can play a major role in controlling symptoms of or preventing diabetes. Diets should be rich in fibers, small amounts of carbohydrates or fats and low in proteins. Foods should also be rich in vitamins, minerals, as well as antioxidants and other factors that boost the immune system. These foods include leafy greens, apples, nuts, whole meal breads and dairy products. Also fresh fruits are good sources of carbohydrates because the sugar in fresh fruit does not need insulin to metabolize. Prevention of diabetes can be accomplished by eating correctly and throwing out the fast food diet.

The next factor to control is weight. Being overweight contributes to many complications which lead to the onset of diabetes. The best way to control weight is to watch your diet and to exercise at least 3 times a week. Exercise is considered a natural cure for many problems or diseases of the body. The current epidemic of obesity is directly connected to the rise in Type 2 diabetes and the rise in diabetes in children. Many researchers believe that this epidemic is caused by our cultures sedentary lifestyle and fast foods. Getting weight down to a healthy limit is important to preventing diabetes.

The management of stress is another very important area that needs to be under control, whether it is emotional, physical or mental stress. Many believe this factor is the most important to control. This not only can prevent the onset of diabetes but is considered a natural cure for many other diseases such as high blood pressure and heart disease. Stress can be managed by exercise, prayer, yoga or meditation. Managing stress can be important in preventing diabetes and all other chronic diseases of the body.

Smoking has an effect on every bodily function as well as symptoms and onset of diabetes. Becoming a non-smoker is extremely important. Smoking constricts blood vessels which interferes with good blood circulation and also interferes with medications and other therapy for diabetes. Stopping smoking is a major lifestyle change that is good for preventing diabetes as well as all other diseases of the body.

Prevention of diabetes can often be accomplished by managing a few critical factors. These factors include diet, weight control, stress and smoking. Controlling these factors will most certainly delay the onset of diabetes if not prevent it totally.
